I’m tired of the sniping at Charles and Camellia. So she’s kind of dowdy, what the hell is he, if not gawky? The subject came up last night and the consensus was that the biggest whiners are men in their 40’s and 50’s. Are they insecure? The younger guys in the group didn’t understand the fuss. As one said they look like your friend’s parents.

When dad moved to Boston after the divorce, he went down to NYC for a weekend with a girlfriend. While there they had dinner with Grace and a friend of hers. That night G called me and she was furious at him. It turned out that Grace went to college with Dad’s date and she felt that he looked ridiculous with this woman old enought to be his daughter. Juliette is seven years younger than my father. They make a nice couple and I think that Charles and Camellia make a nice couple. They certainly make a more appropriate couple than the couples I'm apart of.

Cool again here, but it's not raining. I'd like it to warm up.

I think guys in their fifties feel like they're pretty close to becoming weak, ugly old men who can't get it up anymore. Being with a younger woman makes them feel as if they're still young, virile and attractive. I say if they want to still be young and virile just go to the fuckin' gym and eat properly. Just look at 50-something Sylvester Stallone. Talk about a major hottie...still! Compare that to oh I don't know, just about any guy 25 yrs and older who invests zilch time and effort in eating healthy food and exercising. Enter any office building between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. for examples.

FYI: You wrote Camillia instead of Camilla.

I think the problem here is the one of the incomprehensibility of Charles' choice over here in the 'States. Sure he should have proposed when he was 25 years younger. For some reason the Palace was against it, and Palace intrigue had a large role to play in why Lady Di became who she was. The Court grey beards wanted that 'rock star touch', they wanted the cute blonde heirs, they craved the easy attention and good PR after years of troubles and milked it for all it was worth.

But the British royal family being what they are, (perverse Germans by heritage and disposition), Charles also seemingly naturally preferred Spam over Prime Rib.

As I recall there was a long and embarrassing process in the hunt for a wife for Charles. The biggest impediment was that the future Princess of Wales needed to be a virgin.

Since Charles was not quick to marry all the suspects had discovered the joy of sex. So he ended up robbing a cradle and they lived miserably ever after.

I think the sentiment against Camilla is because Diana blamed her for the breakup between her and Charles. So all the Diana loyalist, which is most of England, can't possibly embrace Camilla now. I, for one, would just wish the media would stop covering these non-sense and give me some worthy story for crying out loud! :) As for Camilla and Charles make a more appropriate couple than the couples you're a part of while entertaining, I'm sure everyone will overlook your youth because of your charm and beauty! We're shallow that way. Don't hate us! :P

I've no problem with them getting married, just with her ever becoming Queen (which she will be if Charles succeeds to the throne despite the spin the Paalace are putting on it). Charles should simply announce that when his mother dies he will abdicate in favour of William and that will be the end of it as far as most Brits are concerned.

I was traveling so I missed the actual event, but from what I can tell it seems to have been a quite lovely event. Even Prince Phillip managed to be sociable, which goes against the grain of his very nature.

There comes a point where one has to leave behind the regrets and missteps of the past and move on. This is one of those points. Prince Charles has moved on.

And he's not even close to Henry VII's record.

I loved the lead I saw in the Times on this -- "The bride wore tweed."

That said, I wish them every happiness.

MG, I hope all is well in Paris -- in the spring!

Camilla would be Queen Consort, which is any woman that marries a King who has the throne via blood. If Elizabeth II had allowed, her husband would be King Consort, but she didn't allow him to get that big of a title, so he's a Prince Consort. Every other Queen of England were Queen Consorts except Elizabeth I, Victoria (right? correct me if I'm incorrect) and Elizabeth II. When a Queen (or King) Consort ascends to the throne after the death of the spouse, usually their offspring are young and the consort rules until said offspring are old enough to really take the reigns on their own.

Okay, I've jibber-jabbered enough. If Charles had been allowed to marry Camilla as a young man, a lot of heartbreak could've been avoided. But, time to move on.
