The French government is having it’s own Katrina moment and it is proving as inept as Bush. Not only is the Paris suburbs burning but also the political futures of Nicolas Sarkozy and Dominique de Villepin.

As you might expect Dad and Julliette have called everyday to check on me and to see if I have heard any news that isn’t in the paper or they haven’t learned from other family members. I repeat a line of one our local gadfly’s that if the rioters come to the Eighth we will mount the barricades and hurl croissants at them. Of course a woman whose train to CDG was stoned the other day didn’t think that was so funny.

Dad has been drawing parallels to the urban riots in America in the 60’s how the immigrant community has finally had enough of the racism of French society. In much the same way that African Americans in northern cities challenged white societies conceit that racism didn’t exist there because it wasn’t codified.

I don’t know where this will lead. The rioters are horridly wanton and seeming to lack an agenda that the violence can advance. I suspect that exhaustion will set in and the violence will begin to subside and then we will realize we need to go forward and together.

I've been watching the news and have been quite thankful that it has not yet spread to your area. Please, though, do be careful.

And yes, the croissants line is quite humorous. :)

Yep, the croissants are funny, the stoning much less so.

I'm with dear old dad on this one. I also fully expect a spasm of official state violence to begin in earnest soon. That will recall the reaction to the famous days of 1968. Then the mass deportations will begin, as will still more repressive fun to be dreamed up by the powers to be too stupid to recognize that this has been a serious problem for over 2 decades now. You can't have a population penned up in an urban slum with 50-60%+ unemployment with out expecting some serious trouble. It always finds you. Control will be fleeting for weeks perhaps, but the hospitals will soon be full.

Cheers & Keep safe, 'VJ'
