Curious. It appears Sarkozy is sensitive about his height, though not enough to marry a short woman, but is this the general caricature of him? Or is this a one-off? Is the tall DeGaulle more the emblem now than the short Napoleon?

The cafe intellectual would say of Sarko, he is a busy little man

I picked the cartoon off another blog and I believe it originated in a UK newspaper so it is part of the usual cross channel sniping.

He has been caught on his toes or accused of lifts in his shoes before, so that makes a convenient caricature and it dovetails nicely with the caricature of France as being a self important nation. All French presidents must ascribe to this belief, just as all American presidents must believe in American exceptionalism, the populous expects it.

Past French presidents expressed this importance by trying to lead Europe away from the US or at least take distinct positions. But Sarko is trying to be closer to the US and still distinct, but most importantly not appear to be a UK-like bushian poodle. For this he's taking a lot of criticism from the left.

Ridiculing Sarko's perceived sensitivity about his height is pretty common as are cartoons of him in Napoleonic poses.

Ah, it's British, which explains so much. Thanks for the more extensive explanation.

I think Obama is adeptly laying ground for better relations with France (and Germany). He touched base with England first, which history demands - and which is currently important given London's importance in the financial disaster. Perhaps he was playing to US interests by over-simplifying Turkey's admission to the EU, but he is the US President after all.

Did you see the British opinion piece about Obama shaking hands with the cop outside 10 Downing? The encouraged copper put his hand out to Mr. Brown, who of course ignored it.

When he stands on his toes, he is just showing his insecurities. It seems to me that he really has nothing to feel insecure about politically. As to his insecurities regarding his taller wife, I am not so sure.
