Our renting of the beach house doesn’t match the traditional French vacation period, so we have had the pleasure of watching the children go off to their first day of school. It’s fun to see them heading up the street, the youngest accompanied by their mothers who often have a child in a carriage and the family dog on a leash. Later, the mother’s return, usually in pairs, merrily anticipating a few hours to themselves.

There is an elementary (JK to Grade Two) and an elementary (Grades Three to Five) on my street and I can expect to see children walking to school next week although the majority are bussed in from the rural countryside. They have now passed out of these two schools but I remember one family had a Shelti and the Shelti would herd its kids to and from school.
